SENTENCE, the key

Your fundamental tool as a writer is the humble SENTENCE.

At the basic level, a SENTENCE must :

  • be clear to the reader (Intelligible)
  • be arranged in proper order and in correct grammar (Coherent)
  • contain only one idea (Unity)

SENTENCE Variety

When writing a paragraph, the sentences we use must not be boring or monotonous.

It is therefore important to vary the length and structure of your sentences. Fortunately or unfortunately, there is no single way or rule to do this.

Generally,

  • short sentences are for emphasis
  • long sentences are for details - to explain or argue

Both have their advantages and drawbacks - too much of each spoils your writing. You will have to learn develop your own style, and this means you have to read a lot and as widely as possible.
